What is Laser Resurfacing?
Laser resurfacing is a non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatment that uses concentrated light energy to improve the skin’s appearance and quality. Depending on the type of laser used and the condition being treated, laser energy can remove damaged outer layers of skin, stimulate collagen production beneath the surface, or accomplish both.
The two major types of lasers used for resurfacing are CO2 (carbon dioxide) or erbium energy devices. Both have their pros and cons, and which is right for you will depend on Dr. Halani’s judgment and your goals.
There are two major subtypes of laser resurfacing. The first is ablative; these lasers are the most aggressive and affect the entire surface of your skin. The second is fractionated; these leave microscopic bridges of healthy skin between treatment areas to allow quicker recovery while still treating the skin overall.
As the skin heals following treatment, new collagen and healthy skin cells develop, helping create a smoother, firmer, and more even complexion. Laser resurfacing may be recommended to address concerns such as fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, sun damage, age spots, uneven pigmentation, enlarged pores, and certain benign skin irregularities.
